Effect of Malotilate(Diisopropyl 1,3-Dithiol 2Ylidenemalonate) in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis and Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract
The effect of malotilate(diisopropyl 1,3-dithiol-2-ylidenemalonate) on liver function in patients with chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis was studied. In 30 patients with chronic liver disease (18 chronic hepatitis and 12 compensated liver cirrhosis), oral administration of malotilate at a dose of 600mg /day for 12 weeks and the regular follow up of liver function tests were performed.
The results were as fallows.
1. Serum transaminase level were significantly decreased after malotilate in chronic hepatitis and livers cirrhosis (p<0. 01, p<0. 01).
2. Serum albumin, total protein and prothrombin time were significantly increased after malotilate in chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis (p<0.01, p<0.05, p<0.05).
3. In 4 out of 6 patients, elevated bilirubin concentration (above 2mg /dl) were restored to normal after malotilate.
4. There were significant symptomatic improvement with malotilate.
5. Side effects were mild epigastric discomfort, anorexia and skin eruption, but spontaneous remission after withdrawal of drug was observed.
From these results, we can suggest that malotilate is a very effective drug in chronic liver disease.
